虚间实影 Space and Shadow

虚实相生如同阴阳两极一样是中国人生活的哲学基础。光影是西方艺术的精髓,虚实是中国人看待事物的眼光。而到了艺术领域,“虚实”更是中国艺术里一个非常重要的概念,在中国人的观念里,有时虚比实更重要。对于长期思考中西方融合的张洪立来说,从哲学角度上的融合是更本质的艺术探索。

基于上个系列——“正反”的光影在空间的探索,新作品在空间形态与立体感上做更多的扩展。因为作品体积的增加,让光影所代表的虚实空间更加清晰可辨。另一方面,作品层次的增加在于作品元素从同个空间转变到物品与物品之间的空间互动而形成的画面,使得作品变化更丰富,并形成对比与节奏,突显空间的层次性与丰富性。

在这次展览新作品中,直线也不再是唯一,艺术家开始把弧形引进画面以此挑战观者的日常视觉感官。以往的视觉经验告诉我们:圆形具有膨胀感。但对游刃于光影空间的艺术家来说圆形在空间的结构可以是任意的,视觉感官也可以重新创作。《两个圆形空间》作品中艺术家特意制造一个鼓起,一个是凹进去的效果。这样的尝试在不同作品中不同平面的变化显而易见,而如此尝试,从直线到弧线的转折是超现实的意识认知也是超现实的绘画动作。

在艺术家一贯的创作中,色条一直是最显著艺术特性。上个系列色条只是凝聚时间的意义,因为新作品增加与物品之间的互动,因此色条在此也具有更清晰的指代意义,不同作品里的色条,因场景不同而异。《神庙》色条所拥抱的是古希腊神庙的柱子。《人类文明》的创作理念来源于日常的书堆,色条所代表的既是书也是影。而整齐而有序的色条也是对现实具象的形的整理、归纳以及简化的过程。这艺术上整理的过程,像是人类对于思想的整理,在不断循环往复的整理过程中形成我们自己。这是东方哲学遵从的从简思想,张洪立将他所体会的东方哲学溶于艺术中,在此,艺术并不仅仅是艺术,而是对于观者人生的启发。

Space and Shadow

Just like Yin and Yang, the continual mutual interaction of between nihility and reality is the rudimentary living philosophy of the Chinese. Lights and shadows are the essences of Western art, and the theory of nihility and reality is about how Chinese people see the universe. In the fields of Chinese art, "nihility and reality" is also a concept of great significance. For the Chinese, nihility sometimes holds more importance than reality. As an artist who has been pondering upon the fusion of Chinese and Western art, Zhang Hongli believes that a fusion in philosophical perspectives means more in exploring the nature of art.

Based on the exploring in lights and shadows in space in his last series "Front and Back", the artist has reached further in spatial configuration and stereoscopic effect in his new works. Due to the size upgrade, spaces between nihility and reality created by lights and shadows look even more prominent and distinguishable. On the other hand, interaction between multiple spaces replaces mono space as primary element of the work, which brings more rhythms and contrasts and highlights the rich layers of spaces in the work.

Instead of using solely straight lines, the artist also has introduced curves into the picture to challenge the viewers' day-to-day visual senses. Common experiences tell us that round shapes appear bigger visually. However, in the eyes of an artist who handles lights and shadows with ease, a round shape could appear in any form in space, and the visual senses could also be reinvented. In "Spaces in Two Round Circles", the artist purposely created a convex effect for one circle and concave for the other. Ideas like that have brought noticeable changes to the pictures in different works of his. The shift from straight lines to curves may become a surrealism transition for his painting as well as for the viewers' cognition.

Color stripes are a consistent signature of the artist. In his last series, color stripes indicate the agglomeration of times. While In his latest works, the newly added interaction between objects imparts the color stripes with more distinct symbolic meanings which changes in different scenarios. In "Temple", color stripes embrace pillars of an ancient Greek Temple. "Human Civilization" is inspired by piles of books from daily life, therefore the color stripes indicate books as well as shadows. Furthermore, neat, orderly color stripes also can be seen as an artistic reorganization, simplification and generalization of real, concrete shapes, just like how human beings reorganize mind and thoughts and repeat that process ceaselessly until our true selves come into being. Eastern philosophy conforms to the principle of simplicity. Zhang Hongli has imbedded his perception of Eastern philosophy in his works where art is not just art, but something enlightening for everyone's life.
