Dissipating Light:

Mr. Lang Lixing's Photo Exhibition

Curator: Duan Yuting

Lang Lixing has been engaged in the practice of photography for half a century, with a vigorous focus on ice and snow photography for over thirty years. Through his long encounter with snow and ice, Lang Lixing has managed to decipher the secret language of snow and gradually elevated his understanding of the subject matter. This is perhaps the reason behind the unspeakable charm in his works of ice and snow that his audience has come to appreciate.

Lang Lixing's initial encounter with snow was in the region of Hulunbuir where he grew up. This is the place where some of the most beautiful snow-covered landscapes in the world can be found. Originally being drawn to the melting frozen surface of Hailar River in the spring, it occurred to the photographer that the stunning views in front of him were only temporary designs by nature and could not be recreated even when the spring season would come again the next year. As photography is the art of capturing time, he quickly realized that the beautiful appearances of snow could indeed be "permanently frozen" thanks to his camera's properties. Out of an innate affinity to snow and a persistent love for photography, Lang Lixing has carried on his practice until this day. What the photographer has achieved over the course of his career is revolutionary not only within the field of ice and snow photography, but for the realm of visual arts in general. Lang Lixing's microscopic depiction of ice has removed his subjects from their external forms, emphasizing on visual elements found underneath the surface. With the light and shadow contrasts, what were meant to be realistic depictions have revealed an abstract beauty that opens up a whole new dimension of aesthetic understanding. This is a new perspective that is strikingly different from the salon photography aesthetics and the winter landscapes previously expressed in ice and snow paintings. Under Lang Lixing's interpretation, snow is not merely a landscape element, under his lens, the photographer explores the relationship between snow and its surrounding environment : vegetation, rocks, mountains and rivers. Photography is able to expose the texture of ice and the photographer takes advantage of this ability to present his subjects in still-life fashion. The camera gives great liberties, both in form and substance, to develop ice and snow photography.

In his personal experience among snow mountains and forests, Lang Lixing has felt great joy but has also met obstacles and suffered hardships. Through his long journey, he has also gained a deeper understanding of the philosophy of life. Under his lens, his subjects reveal a unique artistic quality, they condense into small time capsules akin to amber resin pods filled with precious information inviting to scientific examination or a contemplation of nature's power. This is the way through which the natural world communicates its profound messages to human beings.

To understand Lang Lixing's work surrounding ice and snow, it is important not to confine it to its aesthetic dimension. After years of engaging in the practice of ice and snow photography, Lang Lixing began to notice the critical environmental issue of climate change which is now a major international debate. In the past twenty years, in order to document the impact of global warming on snow and glaciers, Lang Lixing has carried out his investigations in several other countries in addition to the northwestern and northeastern regions of China. In Lang Lixing's view, ice and snow not only serve artistic inspirations, but it is above all the source of all life and its formation and thaw is instrumental to our planet and to the survival of mankind.
